A few notes from my last post.
I forgot to mention that the figures quoted were comp sales, which means they were compared to January 2010, not December 2010. I didn't want people thinking that ebook sales jumped 115% in one month. Though, of course, there was a decent increase in sales between December and January because of the holidays and the many e-readers given as presents.
Also as a follow up to my post, Publishers Weekly wrote an article comparing ebook sales with their hardcover counterparts. The information provided to them was given by publishers on a voluntary basis, so it's by no means complete. The graph is very informative, since it visually represents the percentage of total sales that ebooks provided, compared to the hardcover releases. It seems to me that the difference between the higher ebook sales and the comparatively lower ebook sales is probably caused by the split in reader demographics. Most owners of e-readers are younger (under 40) and tech savvy, hence the higher sales of the 'hip' books on the list, such as Justin Halpern's Sh*t My Dad Says and Steig Larson's The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. It's clear that demographics definitely play a role in ebook sales.
In other news...
I got a new camera! After a trip to the local Target, I walked home with a Canon PowerShot SX120 IS. Now, real photography people know that's really nothing freak out about, especially considering it's a two-year old model (hence why I got it at a very nice discount). But it is a crap-ton better than my old Samsung POS. I had bought my old camera for my trip to New York City, because I needed something cheap and portable. However, I'd gotten a taste for photography while there and the camera really just wasn't up to the task.
The decision to get a new camera was kind of an impulse, but I'm glad I did it. Now I just need the weather to get nicer so I can start going out and taking pictures! I'm sick of taking pictures of my cats.
