Books I Have Read 2011 - "Kat, Incorrigible" by Stephanie Burgis

"A Young Girl Reading" by Jean-Honoré Fragonard

I am not a professional book reviewer. I am not even an amateur one. But I love sharing with people the books that I have read and loved. And so, without further ado, here it goes...

About a month or so ago, I was shelving in the young readers section when I came across a little book called "Kat, Incorrigible" by Stephanie Burgis. Isn't 'incorrigible' just an awesome word? It's right up there with 'amiable'. Two words that get bantered about in period dramas, but never in modern conversation. It's a real shame. I challenge you to use one or both of these words in an everyday conversation. Do it!

Anyhoodle, as if the title hadn't been enough to drag me in, there was no way I could resist this cover. I love it so much! Lovely colors and the expressions on all the girls' faces make me smile.

Since I absolutely suck at summaries, I'm just going to post the one from Goodreads:
Twelve-year-old Kat Stephenson may be the despair of her social-climbing Step-Mama, but she was born to be a magical Guardian and protector of Society--if she can ever find true acceptance in the secret Order that expelled her own mother. She’s ready to turn the hidebound Order of the Guardians inside-out, whether the older members like it or not. And in a society where magic is the greatest scandal of all, Kat is determined to use all her powers to help her three older siblings--saintly Elissa, practicing-witch Angeline, and hopelessly foolish Charles--find their own true loves, even if she has to turn highwayman, battle wild magic, and confront real ghosts along the way!
I was about halfway through this book when I realized I loved it. It has been a long time since something compelled me to sit down and dedicate a giant chunk of time to reading, but this book pulled me right in. Kat was a great character, very spunky and strong-minded. Her sisters were great fun and the adventures they all found themselves in left me stitches. The author did a great job at weaving in period-appropriate facts, while not bogging down the text or beating the reader upside the head with history.

Once I finished the book, I couldn't wait to read another Kat adventure and luckily enough, there are two more to come! The second book, "Renegade Magic" is due out in the States sometime next year, but after a little sleuthing, I discovered it's coming out in the UK in August under the title, "A Tangle of Magicks". Apparently the first book was published there in 2010 under the title "A Most Improper Magick". How cute is that?! Now I have to decide if I want to buy the British version or wait to get the American one...

In the meantime, I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes Regency fiction and/or young readers fiction with fun, energetic female leads. Happy reading!
